Joe the Plumber is an interesting case study in how we define patriotism. He says he supports the military, but he doesn’t pay his taxes. How does he suppose we pay for our military, and the war in Afghanistan and Iraq without taxes? How does he propose paying for the public education his 13 year old son receives without taxes? If our men and women in Iraq aren’t able to get their hands on the latest and greatest equipment, armor and weaponry because of budget issues, should we blame Joe the Plumber?
Thomas Friedman has a great article in the New York Times in which he addresses Sarah Palin’s argument that paying taxes isn’t patriotic.
